While many students spent their mid-semester break relaxing and recharging, first-year DLC Sport Science student, Hayne Dawson, was racing his way to victory at the BMX NSW State Championships!
Held at Lake Macquarie BMX Club in Newcastle on 27 September, this prestigious event brought together around 400 BMX riders, along with their families, supporters and spectators from across NSW and beyond. The competition saw Hayne go head-to-head with approximately 50–60 competitors. As a result, he ultimately secured first place and took home a medal, trophy and the NSW State Champion title.

Hayne’s passion for BMX racing began at just five years old, after watching the sport on television. What started as a childhood interest has since developed into a serious competitive pursuit. In fact, it has taken him to major events both nationally and internationally.
Originally from Tamworth, Hayne remains a member of his hometown BMX club. However, he now trains in Manly up to five times a week when preparing for competitions. His dedication and achievements have also earned him a sponsorship with mountain biking apparel brand Dharco Clothing. He has already signed a contract with them.
However, his journey hasn’t always been smooth riding. Over the years, Hayne has experienced his fair share of injuries, including concussions, fractures and broken bones. Fortunately, this year’s State Championships saw him complete a clean run, making his victory even more rewarding.
Looking Ahead
Hayne hopes to continue travelling the world and competing in as many international BMX events as possible. Beyond his racing ambitions, he also has his sights set on giving back to the sport that has shaped much of his life. After completing his Sport Science studies, Hayne hopes to become a trainer. He wants to help young, aspiring BMX riders develop their skills, confidence and passion for the sport.
For anyone looking to get involved in BMX racing or pursue their own sporting goals, Hayne has one simple piece of advice:

“Have fun while you train and have confidence”
— Hayne Dawson
Hayne is also more than happy to chat with fellow students who are curious about BMX racing. Whether they’re interested in getting started or simply want to learn more about the sport, he wants to help.
Congratulations, Hayne, on an outstanding achievement! It’s fantastic to see our DLC students putting their passion, dedication and sporting knowledge into action beyond the classroom. We can’t wait to see where your BMX journey takes you next!
