Our story
A welcoming community shaped by history
Discover Dunmore Lang College’s journey from its beginnings to the vibrant student community it is today, where tradition, belonging and shared experiences continue to shape everyday college life.
1948 – The Beginning
The story of Dunmore Lang College began long before its doors first opened. In 1948, members of the local Presbyterian community came together with a vision to provide accommodation for female university students, particularly those travelling from rural and regional areas to pursue their education.
Guided by Dorothy Isabel Knox, then Principal of Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Pymble, the community worked towards creating a place where young women could live, learn and feel supported while studying. Although the original vision was to establish the College at the University of Sydney, the opportunity eventually arose at the newly established Macquarie University.

1972 – Our Doors Open
In 1972, the first students moved into Dunmore Lang College. Named after John Dunmore Lang, an influential Presbyterian minister and advocate for education in Sydney, the College began its journey as a women’s residential college before becoming co-educational.
Today
Over the decades, Dunmore Lang College has grown and evolved alongside the university and the students it welcomes. Our facilities have expanded, our community has become more diverse, and new opportunities have emerged for students to connect, contribute and make the most of university life.
Today, more than 50 years on, the heart of the College remains much the same: providing a welcoming place to call home, fostering a strong sense of belonging and helping students make the most of their time at university.
While much has changed since 1972, our commitment to community has remained.
